Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information BunkBill ("we", "us") collects when you use the BunkBill web application, how we use it, and the choices you have. By creating an account you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information we collect
Account information
When you sign up we collect your email address, your password (stored only as a salted hash — we never see the plain text), and optionally your first and last name.
Household and subscription data
Content you create in the app: household names, the subscriptions and one-off expenses you add, amounts, billing dates, cancellation URLs, split percentages, budgets, votes, and activity history. This data is shared with the other members of any household you belong to.
Payment information
Paid-plan payments are processed by Paystack. We do not store your full card number or CVV — those are handled directly by Paystack. We retain a payment reference, amount, currency, and status to manage your subscription.
Technical information
Standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages requested, timestamps) and a session cookie used to keep you signed in. We use your browser's language header to guess a default display currency.
2. How we use your information
- To provide the core service — tracking, splitting, voting, and budgeting.
- To send transactional email: account confirmation, vote notifications, and a weekly renewal-reminder digest.
- To process and manage paid-plan payments through Paystack.
- To secure the service, prevent abuse, and debug problems.
3. Email
We send email through Resend. You receive: a one-time confirmation link at signup, notifications when a household vote starts or resolves, and a weekly "renewing soon" digest. We do not sell your email address or use it for third-party advertising.
4. Sharing
We share data with service providers strictly to operate BunkBill:
- Railway — application hosting and database.
- Paystack — payment processing.
- Resend — transactional email delivery.
We do not sell your personal information. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.
5. Data retention
We keep your data while your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain records (e.g. payment records for accounting).
6. Your choices
- Access & correction — you can view and edit most of your data directly in the app.
- Deletion — contact us to delete your account and associated personal data.
- Email — reply to any digest to ask us to change your reminder settings.
7. Security
We use HTTPS everywhere, hashed passwords, signed session cookies, and two-step email verification on signup. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your data.
8. Children
BunkBill is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. Material changes will be announced in-app or by email. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
